Post-Conference Post!

I survived two nights of 4 1/2 hour conferences!  Yay!   In other news, we’ve been studying volcanoes all week in Reading, and the kids have caught the fever!  They are doing research, taking books out of the library on the topic, and naturally volcano pictures are all over the place!  I love when we tackle a topic that they can really sink their teeth into like this one.  Of course, since our story of the week is all about volcanoes, it helps that we’re studying landforms in Social Studies… and that my partner’s teaching about soil and rocks right now.  I’m working in a temporary Utopia, and I’m diggin’ it!

To tie in the layers of the earth with our nonfiction study, we created cut-aways!  You may remember Sarah Cooley’s apple cut-aways from last year.  Totally precious!  Love her ideas!   This year, I adapted the craftivity to represent the crust, the mantle, and the core, and we also added facts from our volcano/plate tectonics study! It’s hilarious, because my partner totally cut an apple in half in Science to demonstrate the layers of the Earth unbeknownst to me.  {I swear we share the same brain sometimes!}  This made the apple cut-away even more timely, and after looking at a TON of diagrams of the layers of the earth, this was a fun extension that relates to what they already know.  Anyway, this is my example.  I’ll share student examples when they finish! We ran out of time for today, but I am headed to Cincinnati after school tomorrow so I didn’t want to forget to blog about this!  I think the students’ cut-aways are going to be super duper cute!!! 🙂

 We’ve also been working on irregular verbs and subject verb agreement lately.  Here’s a few anchor charts that we made together!  They love Vincent Verb and Susie Subject!  Okay, I hope you all have a Happy Friday friends!  I’m off to bond with the hubs for a bit before bed! Can’t wait to meet all of the Tri-State Bloggers on Saturday! 🙂  By the way, I know I’ve been tagged a few times!  I am trying to respond a little at a time, but it’s been a hectic week, so stay tuned!

    We just finished up landforms! I always love teaching geography! I don't know why but I never think to incorporate Social Studies into my Literacy, it is always the other way around. I like the idea of researching a social studies topic. Thanks for making me think! 🙂
