As an intermediate teacher, I have always been incredibly jealous of all of my teacher friends on the 100th Day of School. Every time I saw my coworkers singing, sporting fun hats, and working on cute activities with their little people, it always made me green with envy. A little. I had pretty much resigned myself to the idea that I was never going to be able to participate in a true 100th Day Celebration, and then I had a bright idea. Why not infuse the 100th Day with a few word work activities? That’s when A 100th Day Cent-sation: Seizing the Day with Big Kids was born! I TRIED to keep up with everything, but I didn’t snap photos of everything we did before my camera cashed out. Insert sad face here. The good news is… I did manage to capture a few moments for your viewing pleasure. π Here’s what we were up to today for part of our class time!
We took a look at lots of words that include the affixes cent-and
centi-. The kiddos helped me generate words for the anchor chart, and
we talked about how not every word that contains cent- has the prefix as
part of the word. Center was a perfect example of a “rule breaker”, so
it was featured on our chart as such. All of the starred words were
confirmed as “rule followers”. We filled “Cent-sational Words” journals
with Frayer models featuring several centi- and cent- words.
We also took a little looksie at the homophones “cent”, “scent”, and
“sent”. The kiddos filled out flip books during this part of class,
and they recorded definitions, sentences, and illustrations to help them
remember the distinction between each term.
One of my favorite activities was taking photos with the “Aging Booth” app! It’s only 99 CENTS, and it was the perfect way to engage my kiddos in a little narrative piece about what they expect their lives to be like as centenarians. Here’s my 100 year old mug to give you an idea of how the app works. The kids were absolutely WILD about their photos and this activity.
It’s been a super busy week at school, and I have so much more to share tomorrow! The Valentine’s Day Box Book Reports and the Cardboard Challenge creations have been trickling in, and they are SO IMPRESSIVE! I can’t wait to share them with you… but in the meantime, I’ll leave you with a few sneak peeks of both sets!

Valentine’s Day Box Book Reports: 3rd Grade |
I’ll be back soon-ish with a full play-by-play of how the presentations, reports, and boxes turned out! I can’t wait to share the rest of them with you! π As a sidenote, if you already have my Poetry: The Music of Our Hearts pack, it has just been completely renovated. It was one of my very first products, and even though the content was solid, it definitely was no longer reflective of my design abilities, so it got a little makeover. Make sure you download the new and improved version!
